Letter to the Editor: Five Heads Are Better Than Three

Great news for local taxpayers! The Douglas County Clerk and Recorder verified enough signatures to put a measure on the November 2026 ballot asking if we should grow our Board of County Commissioners from 3 to 5 members. If voters approve it, this change could give our community an even stronger voice in local government and how our tax dollars are spent!
Voting yes to increase the number of Douglas County Commissioners from 3 to 5 means better representation and ensures balance and transparency in decision-making and financial stewardship.
Consider a family member or friend with a complicated medical decision to make. Having a panel of five doctors discussing their difficult case will yield a better result than a panel of three. A majority decision of three specialists might consist of two people trained similarly and one dissenter.
But, a five-person team might include surgery, radiology, pathology, oncology, and internal medicine. You’re not just adding voices to the discussion — you’re adding different ways of seeing a problem.
Douglas is a large, complex, diverse, and changing county. Having five County Commissioners brings more perspectives, knowledge, and valuable lived experiences to our government.
